Ready to Work From Home?

Want to Work from Home? Here Are Some Tips

If you’re hoping to work from home, there are plenty of opportunities these days. It’s not just Jordan Essentials that gives you the freedom to be your own boss, more and more traditional companies are seeing the benefits of letting their employees work from home, not to mention how many people are starting their own businesses. But it’s important to remember that working from home, as nice as it might sound, isn’t for everyone. While some people will take to it like a duck to water, others will struggle to find the discipline and drive to work effectively from where they live. Since Jordan Essentials began life as a small, home-based family business, we can share some advice if you like the sound of turning your home into your headquarters. Even if you’re already successful at working from home or telecommuting, these tips are always handy to keep in mind.

Define Your Work Space

First and foremost, it’s important to get a common misconception about people who work from home out of the way – you won’t be spending all day on the couch! Or at least, we don’t recommend it. One of the best basic things to remember if you’re working from home is that you need to separate your living space from your working space. It certainly sounds appealing to do your job while staying in bed all day, but it also seriously hurts your productivity. You don’t need to necessarily add a whole new office to your house, but you should pick a specific space – preferably reasonably separate – where you can set up a desk or small work station. Creating a work-specific area helps you stay in a professional mindset when you need it most, which will help you concentrate and get things done.

Set Your Hours

Speaking of productivity, there are a lot of distractions at home. Another pitfall of working on your couch, in bed, or in other, more casual parts of the house is that you’re easily distracted. For some people, being at home all day makes it harder to stick to a workday routine, so this is something you need to set up from the get-go. Make yourself a timetable similar to the kind of traditional work routine you’d find in an office. Set yourself breaks and a lunch to break up the day, and to define the times when you need to be working. Set yourself a start and end to the work day and, most importantly, stick to this routine! The more you do it, the harder it will stick, and the more you’ll get done. Making to-do lists or tasks lists will only add to how well your routine works.

Make Sure You Have Privacy

If you’ve worked in an office before, you probably have experience with some of the distractions that will throw you off your rhythm and get in the way of your work. Questions, meetings, impromptu coffee breaks and more threaten to pull you away from your desk. When you work from home, especially if you have a family, you can be susceptible to the same problems. Before you get started, make sure your friends and family understand that “work from home” still means work. This can be a little harder with smaller children, but one of the benefits of working from home is the flexibility. While you should keep a routine, you can change that routine to fit around your family life.

Stay Healthy

Self-discipline, routine, and privacy are all important factors in staying productive as you work from home. But it’s also important that you stay healthy! We don’t just mean physically, but mentally, too. First, the physical – a downside of working at home is easy access to the fridge. It’s hard enough to avoid snacking at a regular office, but now you have your own kitchen right there! Be strict with yourself about when and what you eat. If you find yourself spending a lot of time sitting at a computer, make sure you focus on physical movement before or after work, or on weekends, too. For the sake of your mental health, it’s also important not to isolate yourself. Yes, privacy is important, but so is not living for your work. Fortunately, working with Jordan Essentials gives you plenty of opportunities to meet and speak to new people, but if you do find yourself absorbed in work alone, take the time to socialize. Spend time with family and friends, and make sure you do it away from your workspace.
